EMI Calculator – Home, Car & Personal Loan
What is EMI?
EMI (Equated Monthly Instalment) is the fixed amount you pay every month to repay a loan. Each EMI covers both interest and part of the principal, with more interest in the early months and more principal later. It works for home, car and personal loans.
Formula
EMI = P × r × (1 + r)n ÷ [(1 + r)n − 1], where P is the loan amount, r is the monthly interest rate (annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100) and n is the number of months.
Worked example
A ₹10,00,000 loan at 9% per year for 20 years gives an EMI of about ₹8,997. Total payment is about ₹21,59,342, so total interest is roughly ₹11,59,342, more than the loan itself.
Frequently asked questions
How can I reduce my total interest?
Choose a shorter tenure, make part-prepayments, or negotiate a lower rate. Even a small prepayment early on saves a lot of interest.
Does a longer tenure lower the EMI?
Yes, but you pay more interest overall.
Are processing fees included?
No. Fees, insurance and other charges are separate from the EMI calculation.
Is the EMI fixed on a floating-rate loan?
Not always. When the rate changes, either your EMI or your tenure is adjusted, depending on the lender.
