SIP Step-Up Calculator – Annual Top-Up SIP Returns
The SIP rises by the step-up percentage at the start of each year. Returns are assumed constant, so real results will differ.
What is a step-up SIP?
A step-up SIP (also called a top-up SIP) is a systematic investment plan where the monthly amount rises by a fixed percentage every year. Because your income usually grows over time, raising your SIP in line with it can build a much larger corpus than a flat SIP, without a big strain on your budget at the start. This calculator shows the effect year by year.
How the calculation works
Each year the SIP is the previous year's amount multiplied by (1 + step-up%). Every month the balance earns the monthly return (annual rate ÷ 12) and the instalment is added, either at the start or at the end of the month, depending on the timing you choose. Returns are assumed constant, which real markets never are.
Worked example
You start a SIP of ₹10,000 per month, increase it by 10% every year, and assume a 12% annual return for 10 years with investments at the start of each month. The SIP grows to about ₹23,579 per month in the final year. You invest about ₹19,12,491 in total and the estimated value is about ₹33,74,326.
A flat SIP of ₹10,000 under the same assumptions invests ₹12,00,000 and reaches about ₹23,23,391, so the annual step-up adds roughly ₹10,50,936 to the final value.
Frequently asked questions
What step-up percentage should I choose?
Many people match it to their expected salary growth, for example 5% to 10%. Pick a figure you can sustain, since stopping the step-up halfway reduces the benefit.
Are the results guaranteed?
No. Mutual fund returns are market-linked and vary. The calculator is a projection based on the return you enter, so try a few lower and higher scenarios.
Does the result include tax?
No. It shows a pre-tax estimate. Tax on gains depends on the type of fund and how long you hold it.
Start of month or end of month?
Investing at the start of the month gives each instalment one extra month of growth, so the value is slightly higher. Choose the option that matches how your SIP actually runs.
