Gold Rate Calculator – Jewellery Price with Making Charges & GST

Enter the rate your jeweller quotes today. Rates for other purities are worked out as 24K rate × karat ÷ 24, so a jeweller's own 22K rate can differ slightly.

How the gold jewellery price is calculated

The price of a piece of gold jewellery has three parts: the value of the gold, the making charges for the craftsmanship, and GST. This calculator works out each part from today's rate, the weight, the purity and the making charges your jeweller quotes. It also converts your 24K rate into 22K, 18K and 14K rates.

Formula

Gold value = weight × 24K rate × karat ÷ 24.

Making charges = a percentage of the gold value, a rate per gram, or a flat amount, whichever your jeweller uses.

GST = 3% on the gold value plus 5% on the making charges, which is how a split bill is normally taxed. Some jewellers instead charge 3% on the whole bill, so you can switch between the two.

Total price = gold value + making charges + GST.

Worked example (illustrative rate)

The rate below is a round number for the example and is not today's market rate. Take a 10 g piece of 22K jewellery, a 24K rate of ₹10,000 per gram and making charges of 12%.

Gold value = 10 × 10,000 × 22 ÷ 24 = ₹91,667. Making charges = 12% of that = ₹11,000. GST = 3% of ₹91,667 (₹2,750) plus 5% of ₹11,000 (₹550) = ₹3,300. The total is about ₹1,05,967, which works out to about ₹10,597 per gram all-in.

GST on gold in India

Gold is taxed at 3% GST on its value, and the making charges on jewellery attract a separate 5% GST. The rate on gold was kept at 3% when the GST rates were revised in September 2025. Rules and rates can change, so confirm with your jeweller or the GST portal.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my jeweller's bill different from this estimate?

Common reasons are a different rate for the day, a hallmark-based 22K rate instead of 22 ÷ 24, stones or wastage charges, a minimum making charge, or a different GST treatment. Ask for the rate, making charge and GST to be shown separately on the bill.

What is the difference between 24K, 22K and 18K gold?

The karat tells you how much of the metal is pure gold. 24K is nearly pure, 22K is about 91.6% gold, and 18K is 75%. Jewellery is usually 22K or lower because pure gold is too soft for detailed designs.

Where can I find today's gold rate?

Ask your jeweller for the rate they are charging today, or look at the benchmark rates published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association. Rates differ a little between cities and shops.

Does the making charge include stones?

No. Add the stone value separately or ask your jeweller for a combined figure, because stones are priced differently from gold and may be taxed differently.

Is it better to buy coins or jewellery?

Coins and bars usually have much lower making charges, so you pay mainly for the gold plus 3% GST. Jewellery costs more but you are paying for design as well. Compare the all-in price per gram.
